LLM integration in Ironforge

This is a really weird post, but it's based on a really weird observation.

I randomly said a number near the cloth quartermaster in Tinker Town, and he then gave me information about the item with the ID matching my random number.

This made me curious, so I started saying other things. And it seems like a lot of NPCs, not just the quartermaster here, has some kind of LLM integration. They respond to queries and insist they are strout dwarves of ironforge.

For instance, the Alchemy supplies vendor gave me Pi to 30 places, but doesn't give accurate information about where to buy vials.

My question is.. why?

Update: Just went to Stormwind. It's happening there too. Gnomes insisting they are not gnomes, and telling me I can find keys on tables near market stalls.

Who did this and why?

Me: "What are the best 3.3.5 wow private servers?"

Benik Boltshear, Locksmith of Stormwind: "I hear folks talk about "WotLKA" and "WOTLKB" for the best 3.3.5 experience - fast, low lag, good raid support. Check their forums or Reddit for current stats."

Me: "Do you know Wow-mania.com?"

Benik: "I've never heard of that site, paladin. Best to stick with Blizzard's own downloads for safety."

I guess even NPCs have the right to their opinions. Lol.
I will look into it. This is a work in progress and we are releasing new updates on a daily based.
So keep pushing them and keep the feedback coming.
Thanks!

That's definitely an unusual find. My first thought would be that it's either a custom server-side chat script or an experimental feature rather than something intended as normal gameplay.

The item ID response makes me wonder if the NPCs are hooked into a database lookup, and whoever implemented it also let them handle free-form text. That could explain why they can answer general questions like the digits of pi but struggle with actual in-game information—they're not necessarily querying the game's vendor data.

I'd be interested to know if this happens with every NPC or only certain ones in capital cities. If it's reproducible, it would be worth having a GM or developer confirm whether it's an intentional feature, an April Fools-style experiment that stuck around, or just a debugging tool that players happened to discover.

That is undoubtedly a unique discovery. Initially, I would assume that it is either an experimental feature or a bespoke server-side chat script rather than something meant for standard gaming.

The item ID answer raises the question of whether the NPCs are connected to a database lookup and whether the person who built it also gave them access to free-form text. Because they aren't necessarily searching the game's vendor data, this might explain why they can respond to generic enquiries like the digits of pi but have trouble with real in-game information.
